After a flurry of emails and some help from Mother Nature; the Winona Forest Tourathon 25k classic race was the site of the 2022-23 NYSSRA Nordic Championship. Winona was the perfect sylvan backdrop for a morning of classic skiing. Competitors could be seen setting up wax tables behind cars looking for that magic kick wax mix for the morning venue. With last minute snowfall and excellent grooming by the WFRA volunteers, the tracks were in excellent condition for the racers. Temperatures held between 24F-36F making for very enjoyable racing conditions. Jim Miller, a journeyman of the NYSSRA circuit, crushed his home course with a commanding double pole performance. Jim took the lead from the very beginning and did not look back for most of the race. Not only did he secure the win on the course, but he also took home the prestigious Wilkinson Points Award trophy! Jessica Northan of GHN-ADK last year’s W.P.A. trophy winner, was the top female skier of the day winning the women’s 25k handily. Notable scholastic winners were Brayden Ashbury(U14) and Chizaram Seyse(U10) in the 12.K classic race. A low key, bonfire, awards ceremony was conducted by Mark Chmielewicz and Phil Matthews. A special thanks to Paula Moyer and WFRA for allowing NYSSRA to combo with the Tourathon as our end of the year Championship race!
