This past week featured some major new snow around much of the state and some great NYSSRA racing in the Eastern region. The deep fresh snow made for a true mid-winter feel and memorable race condtions. Results from the Sacandaga mini-marathon and the Shenendehowa Classic race can be found here.
Only a few weeks are left in the 2013-2014 NYSSRA race season and some of the best races are yet to come. The points the points series is still very close and the Wilkinson Cup Series is still up for grabs with the NYSSRA Championship weekend of racing still on the line.
This weekend features races in Winona Forest (The Tourathon), a skiathlon in Byrncliff (RXCSF is hosting) and in Saranac Lake (Peru Nordic’s Cookie Clash). The Tourathon is a perennial favorite for those loving long distance classic races and Peru Nordic looks to once again raise money to help crumble cystic fibrosis. And if you are out in western NY you can enjoy a fun format that features both classic and skate racing in the Poronkusema Skiathlon. It is a good idea to start planning your March 1-2 weekend for this years NYSSRA Championship weekend. Get your club friends together and start making your race plans. The weekend features the following:
- A biathlon sprint race on Saturday
- A Saturday afternoon club relay that includes combined nordic and biathlon (see registration page for full details) This is a great way to introduce all our xc skiers to the sport of biathlon, so if you have never tried biathlon this is your chance! See registration page for how to try it out. Teams can compete in 2, 3 or 4 people.
- A Sunday Morning nordic distance championship race.
- A Sunday afternoon Ski-Orienteering championship
- A “Try-It” for Charity 5K family ski to raise money for the Alzheimer Association of Central New York. Please bring your family friends, neighbors and winter lovers to enjoy the nordic scene at Van Ho and cap off a great weekend on nordic action.
- After ski party! We would like to have all weekend participants gather together in the newly renovated lodge at Van Ho for all-season awards, Wilkinson Cup awards, race awards and a festive get-together. This will include food and drink for all as well as lodge offerings.
