Members are reminded that their NYSSRA Nordic membership is reciprocal with New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) membership. Thus, NYSSRA members may participate in many of NENSA sponsored events and programs. I took advantage of a tremendous opportunity to begin my Nordic ski season by signing up for NENSA\u2019s trip led by Janice Sibilia to the annual Thanksgiving week Yellowstone Ski Festival <\/a>in Montana.<\/p>\n For the six of us, it was a delight to leave our roller skis at home in the Northeast and ski the “early snows” of the famed Rendezvous Ski Trails of West Yellowstone, MT. “This is surreal? I can’t believe we are training, being coached, and racing on such perfect early snow!” was the exclamation heard everywhere<\/p>\n Photo (Rendezvous Trails)<\/p><\/div>\n Highlights included lots of skate and classic technique work coached by\u00a0Janice Sibilia and constructive\u00a0feedback from her video critiques.\u00a0Janice is one of\u00a0NENSA’s most dedicated and committed coaches for such a\u00a0“total immersion” ski camp. “This is\u00a0your\u00a0first time back on snow and it’s at 6,800 feet elevation. Work hard and\u00a0get your technique in order\u00a0but go easy,” we were told.\u00a0Seemed like an oxymoron. However, there were no excuses.\u00a0\u00a0Getting the technique right now is critical to the winter\u00a0ahead. Coach\u00a0Janice gave\u00a0presentations on altitude skiing,\u00a0physiology of training and recovery, flexibility, base prep waxing, and\u00a0tips for\u00a0racing.<\/span><\/p>\n Photo (Coach Janice waxing)<\/p><\/div>\n <\/p>\n Activities Include USSA Super Tour Races<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Festival activities\u00a0included a Try It and Buy It Gear Demo at the trails,\u00a0Indoor Ski\u00a0Show,\u00a0waxing presentations, and RACING — yes, USSA Super Tour races to watch or compete in!\u00a0\u00a0Of course we raced —\u00a0Classic Sprint, Freestyle, Classic\u00a0races. It was reassuring to have Coach Janice’s\u00a0racing support from pre-waxing to wax adjustments, and advice before heading to the start line.\u00a0During\u00a0the 15K skate race,\u00a0my lungs and legs were given a\u00a0dose of oxygen debt that I have not experienced in a long time. The hills were tough and\u00a0downhills only gave\u00a0temporary\u00a0recovery relief.\u00a0The next day’s 10K classic race was even tougher<\/span><\/p>\n Photo (Training Day)<\/p><\/div>\n <\/p>\n What a week!\u00a0\u00a0It was great to share the Rendezvous trails with so many skiers from around the U.S. and Canada. We even seized opportunities to see\u00a0an IMAX movie,\u00a0visit the\u00a0Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center,\u00a0and\u00a0ski into Yellowstone National Park in search of wildlife.\u00a0Thanksgiving dinner at our Three Bear Lodge residence served up a feast of prime rib\u00a0and turkey with all the trimmings.<\/span><\/p>\n Giving Thanks <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n We gave thanks to the early snow and for\u00a0the\u00a0opportunity to train together for the 2009-10 season. We\u00a0wondered why there were so few other skiers\u00a0from the Northeast participating in NENSA’s trip.\u00a0So, mark your 2010 calendar now for next year’s festival. <\/span><\/p>\n Be sure to watch NENSA\u2019s website<\/strong><\/a> regularly for events and programs that will interest you.
